The school inspectors visited Mayfield School before the summer break.
Every aspect of the school’s work from teaching to pastoral care was given a top mark.
Paul Garside, chairman of governors at the Moor Lane, Torquay, school, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and well deserved recognition of the hard work and dedication of so many people associated with Mayfield School.
“The children at Mayfield are truly inspirational and it was especially pleasing to see their outstanding behaviour and achievements recognised by the Ofsted inspectors.”
In their report, the inspectors praised the special needs school for the ‘outstanding care, guidance and support that pupils receive’.
The report said: “This puts them in a position to be ready to learn. The promotion of pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development combined with outstanding teaching over time enables all pupils to make outstanding progress.”
Pupils told inspectors they were very happy in school, that they enjoy their work and learn new things. They also were able to make new friends.
The report also highlighted the excellent partnerships the school has with other schools and agencies which impact on all aspects of a pupil’s school life from early year’s provision through to leaving school.
It also focused on the effectiveness of the governing body and the school leadership team in ensuring the achievement of pupils.
Inspectors received an overwhelming majority of positive comments from parents and carers, confirming the view that teaching and learning in the school is outstanding and that it is a special place that they would recommend to other parents.
Headteacher June Palmer said: “I have had the privilege of being the head teacher of Mayfield for many years and am proud to be a member of such a professional, hard working and dedicated team of staff.
“The school has always strived to make improvements and this Ofsted inspection recognises that journey.
“We are taking time to celebrate our achievement and then we will move on with being the best that we can be for the sake of the children and young people here and in the community of schools that deserve nothing less of us.”
